Our aim was to pursue new technology that would significantly advance the field through the use of additive manufacturing (3D printing). Additive manufacturing, and more specifically laser sintering, is a method that can produce customized titanium implants using a bottom-up manufacturing approach.

RESEARCH

We performed detailed In Vitro analyses in order to fully understand the biological effects of this new implant, and found that our surfaces boosted both mesenchymal differentiation and osteoblast maturation, while also inducing the production of local factors that enhanced the bone micro-environment and blood vessel formation. When we examined osseointegration of the implant in animals (In-Vivo analyses) it was found to exhibit superior performance compared to conventional implants.
